Parent Teacher Interviews
It is such a pleasure to be in such a supportive community, where parents and teachers work together for the benefit of our children. I know I am the envy of my educational colleagues who work in tough schools. This was brought home to me this week at the Year 12 parent teacher interviews, and despite the rain, the parents greeted teachers like long lost friends. The feedback that I received was so positive, so uplifting, I felt that I had to share this with you.
Parents already know that nagging doesn’t work, but having a clear goal of what students want to do actually is a more productive approach. If your child doesn’t have something to work towards, make sure they visit the careers advisor, for some guidance, as this might set them on the path to something that they didn’t know about or had not considered.
One thing that parents can do is to help get your child organised. A quiet place to study, regular meal times, encouraging a balanced lifestyle, helping to set boundaries for things like bedtimes does make a difference. Simple things like having a calm environment, allows student’s brains to take a break, which enables them to take in new information and retain what they have learnt.
Students came away from the night with a clear understanding of what they needed to do to improve. It is good for parents to hear that advice alongside their children, so that they can guide and nurture them, and hearing it together means that you are all on the same page.
Our teachers love to meet the parents, having that connection when you meet in person strengthens our relationship and gives us greater understanding of your child. The other important function that is serves, is that if our teachers feel they know you, they will feel comfortable in phoning you, both when things go well and also if they notice that your child needs a bit more encouragement.

Year 7 News
The Year 7's had a fabulous time at Aussie Bushcamp, Tea Gardens, in Week 7. Despite some extremely hot weather, the students took part in rock climbing, kayaking, archery as well as testing their strength nerves and interpersonal skills with various challenge activities.

Year 8 News
Year 8 have had a great start to the term and are back into the routine of things. They started off the term with SMASHED, a production where they looked at responsible choices around alcohol followed by Digital Thumbprint last week where they learnt how to behave online in a manner that is safe and respectful towards themselves and others. We are hoping that these incursions have allowed students to think a little bit more deeply about the consequences of their own actions and the impacts this can have not only on themselves but other parties. We would really appreciate if you could continue to have these conversations at home.

Year 10 News
It has been a great term for Year 10 who have hit the ground running. In addition to their studies many students have participated in extracurricular activities such as their Duke of Ed hike, media club, winning 3rd and 1st place in my cultural cool off, presenting during the Harmony day Assembly, peer support, competing in Zone athletics, year 7 camp and the mountain biking competition, just to name a few. We’re so proud of their ambitions and dedication.
Next term we are offering two student session run by an external company, Elevate Education, that we have worked with over a number of years. The first session has a focus on goal setting, as we know students with a defined goal are more likely to succeed and engage in schoolwork. The second session is to help students with study techniques and routines to support them to be more successful at school.
Student Elevation on the 15th of June 2023
In this seminar we examine the key fundamentals for senior school success and introduce students to a range of growth mindset-based skills.
Each seminar covers:
- Belief: Students analyse the role of belief as a means to propel them to their personal best in their final years. They also confront their conditioned beliefs and self-limitations.
- Goal setting: All students are led through a 4-step goal-setting process, helping them to identify their unique and compelling reasons to drive them through their final years. Goals examined are based on the student’s ambitions and include career path, university and vocational study-based goals.
- Short term planning: Once students have identified their compelling reasons they are led through a short-term planning process, helping them break their goal into a series of achievable, short term benchmarks.
Study Sensei on the 4th of August 2023
We address the most common question: “What is study?” This seminar breaks down the study techniques of the top students, providing students with a road map for what work they need to be doing across the year and how to do it.
Each seminar covers:
- Working consistently: How to get notes done during term, rather than just before exams. This includes how the top students use the syllabus to frame their study.
- Note-taking: How to structure and review an organised set of notes that will facilitate effective learning.
- Conceptual learning skills: Teaching students how to break the information into relevant topics and understand how concepts fit together, as opposed to simply rote-learning the material.
- Standing out on assessment: How to distinguish themselves from the thousands of other students who are all taught the same material.
You will receive a permission note and information about payment (about $25) in total early next term.

Year 12 News
Year 12 students have been busily studying and completing their assessment tasks and are now over half way through their HSC courses. All Year 12 students are reminded that stress is a normal part of studying for the HSC and that it is best managed through balance with leisure activities. Students should manage some self care over the holidays by carrying out exercise, reading a book, listening to music or time in a casual job. They are reminded that the HSC is a marathon, not a sprint and that regular revision, drafting and study should fit into their daily schedules. Local libraries like Chatswood and Forestville libraries offer a space where students can study in groups or individually. Forestville library now offers 24hr opening hours.

KHHS Leaders
Youth Parliament
At Killarney we take pride in developing leadership qualities in our students. We are thrilled that Lily, one of our Year 10 students and current President of the SRC, has been selected for the NSW Youth Parliament Program. In this program, Lily will learn about the parliament system, as well as developing her community engagement, self-confidence, and teamwork. She will work with other school-aged participants to create reports and recommendations on issues for change within each government portfolio, and will gain experience debating these during a mock sitting week at NSW Parliament House. The residential program culminates in a final event in which the students present their report to a government MP in each portfolio. Lily is a fantastic leader within her school community already, and we wish Lily all the best with the program.
Young Women in Public Affairs
We are thrilled to announce that Year 12 student and current School Captain, Emily Offner has been awarded the Zonta Young Women in Public Affairs Award for 2023. She has been awarded $750 to continue her advocation efforts. Emily is a passionate advocate for the rights of not only women, but all groups experiencing discrimination or exclusion in society. Of particular value to the female student body has been Emily’s work to ensure the availability of sanitary products for all menstruating students and work alongside the school’s senior executive to improve the school uniform options to take into account the diverse needs of young people. Emily is a valued member of the Killarney Prefect team and future leader.
Congratulations Emily!

CAPA
School Musical - The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Our 2023 school Musical is The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a hilarious and quirky show about the joys of being a little bit different and the difficulties of growing up. An outstanding group of students have spent months rehearsing the show, including actors, band ensemble and technical crew for lighting and sound. All involved have turned the show into something quite special and we are excited to share it with the wider school community. A special thanks also goes out to our dedicated CAPA teachers, Mr. Blade Fuller (Music) and Mr. Sam Hawkins (Drama) who made this possible.

Earlier this year we made the decision to postpone the performances until Term 2, May 31 and June 1-2 in order to incorporate our new lighting and staging that is being installed in the Term 1 holidays. On Wednesday the 30th March, we presented a preview matinee performance to years 5 and 6 from Forestville PS and Killarney Heights PS. All the students had a fantastic time, laughing and clapping along with the show.
Performance and trybooking information will be available by early Term 2, so keep your eyes peeled for tickets and practise your spelling!

Year 7 - Food in Art - Collage
Year 7 have been studying how artists use food in their art practice. Some of these artists are Claus Oldenburg, Vincent Namatjira and Klaus Pilcher. They have now started their assessment task – to create a ‘Brilliant Burger’. A brilliant burger is a burger with silly ingredients. Students are using collage to create their burgers, focusing on colour, texture, composition and layering. It has been great getting to know Year 7 students and their artmaking abilities!

Year 8 - Planet Pollution - A3 Poster
Year 8 have been studying artists who create art with a message. They are currently creating an A3 poster about an animal of their choice that is negatively impacted by pollution. Students have a choice of using either coloured pencils or water colour pencils. They have been learning how to create tonal depth, texture and layering with these materials. Students are still working on their posters – here are some ones under construction!

Year 9 - Your Digital Self - Linocut
Our two Year 9 classes have been exploring their relationship with technology through printmaking. They have created a self-portrait of themselves interacting with technology. For some, these interactions are negative, positive or neutral. We have been so impressed by the skill Year 9 has demonstrated so far!

Year 10 - Ceramics:Manipulation of Form and Surface - Ceramics
Our two Year 10 classes have been looking at abstract ceramic forms. The focus artists are Merran Esson and Brian Rochefort. Their brief for this term was to choose a location and represent its industrial and natural side in two abstract ceramic vessels. There is a focus on form and texture. We have been so impressed by their ceramic skills, especially as this cohort missed out on a lot of ceramics due to covid. After the school holidays, students will glaze their artworks. The final results will be in the newsletter next term! Watch this space.

Excursion: Powerhouse Museum to see ‘Clay Dynasty’
To support and inspire students with their ceramic skills and understanding of artists, we went on an excursion to the Powerhouse Museum to see the ceramics exhibition ‘Clay Dynasty’. This exhibition had a huge range of ceramics, ranging from traditional to more contemporary works. Students had time to look at the artworks and then did an educator lead tour with Art Educators from the Powerhouse Museum. It was a great day!

Year 11 – Representations of the Australian Landscapes – Painting
Our two Year 11 classes have been looking at how a wide range of artists have interpreted the Australian Landscape. Currently they are working on developing painting skills and they have a choice of painting realism or abstraction. Here are some of their paintings!

Year 12 – Body of Work
Year 12 are currently working on their Body of Works. We can’t post any photos of their major works – you’ll just have to take our word for it! They have just finished studying a unit called ‘Aesthetics’ focusing on how the aesthetics of art has changed over time and why. Artists of focus were Yayoi Kusama, Jackson Pollock and Marcel Duchamp. Year 12 have come a long way from Term 4 last year – they have a clearer understanding of their concept and their artmaking skills. There are lots of exciting artworks in the making!
Art Express Excursion at The Art Gallery of NSW
Year 12 students and Visual Arts teachers went to the Art Gallery of New South Wales to see the 2022 Art Express exhibition. Art Express is an exhibition that showcases Band 6 artworks from around the State. Students got to see a variety of Band 6 artworks up close and were able to reflect on their own Body of Work. We had a great time – lots of discussion and analysing artworks. It was so great seeing Year 12 be able to reflect on their art practice so independently and we loved hearing which artworks they loved (and disliked!).

Year 12 2022 – Xpress Yourself exhibition at Manly Art Gallery
Two Visual Arts Year 12 students from Ms Burton’s 2022 class were selected to be in the ‘Xpress Yourself’ Exhibition at Manly Art Gallery. This exhibition showcases Year 12 Body of Works from around the Northern Beaches. We are very proud to have Keira’s photographs and Megan’s drawing and ceramics showcased in this show. This exhibition is still showing at Manly Art Gallery if you’d like to see it! Congratulations to both of these students.

Annika Fairweather at Art Express – Hazelhurst Arts Centre
We are very proud to have had Annika Fairweather’s sculpture chosen for 2022 Art Express. Her sculpture is currently showing at the Hazelhurt Arts Centre. Annika’s sculpture received a Band 6 – lots of planning and hard work went into this artwork. Congratulations Annika!

“My body of work is an exploration of the relationship between nature and the constructs of architecture. My anxieties around stability and my fascination with motion, gravity and negative space are expressed through the fragile and temporary nature of the work. Each structure is connected by strings and bridges to the others. These links represent connectedness and solace in a time lacking permanence. Elements of the natural world such as leaves, sticks and natural textures merge with symbols of dials, DNA and satellites, referencing the modern world and human interference, yet also how nature is eternal and withstanding.
Introducing….Media Club!
This year we have the ‘Media Club’ – a group of keen photography students who are taking photos for our school events. This group is run by Mr Fuller (music) and Ms Slater (Visual Arts). So far they have taken photos for the International Women’s Day assembly, Athletics Carnival, Swimming Carnival, Harmony Day assembly and photos for the school website. They have been working so hard and we are so impressed by their enthusiasm, independence and diligence! Keep an eye out for their photography on the KHHS Instagram page. THANK YOU Media Team for all your hard work this term!!

Photography Club – Thursdays 3.30 – 4.30pm - Term 2, Weeks 2-8
Photography Club is starting Term 2 Weeks 2-8. Students will learn how to use a digital camera (provided by the school), take photos and then learn editing skills in photoshop.
This after school art class filled up quickly! In Terms 2, 3 and 4 the Visual Arts Department offer an extra-curricular art class on Thursday afternoons. Art clubs are open to all years but students need to sign up as spots are limited.
If you missed out on a spot for Photography Club, Art Club will be running again in Term 3. We advertise on Sentral daily notices and posters around the school and have a sign-up sheet outside the CAPA staffroom to allow plenty of time for you to sign up. Keep your eyes peeled for more art clubs next year!
Looking for something FREE to do these school holidays?

There is a HUGE new art gallery located right next to the Art Gallery of NSW in the city. The $344 million Sydney Modern Project is the most significant cultural development in the city since the opening of the Sydney Opera House nearly half a century ago. Together with the NSW Government’s $244 million in funding, the Art Gallery has raised more than $100 million from private donors to support this significant investment in art and culture for future generations. The art teachers spent a whole 4 hours exploring this gallery when it first opened at the beginning of the year!!

Languages
Japanese
Year 12 Japanese students wrote short articles and speeches on how learning Japanese has affected their lives. One student was brave enough to stand up at the Harmony Day assembly and present her speech in Japanese and English. She inspired students who are studying Japanese in the younger years to persevere with their studies, as a symbol of what you can achieve when you work hard and don't give up.

PDHPE
Athletics Carnival
Students made the most of the day as the athletics carnival went off without a hitch. With over 400 students participating in at least one event, participation was at its highest. There were some extraordinary events, including over 30 girls competing in the 13-year-old long jump and javelin, over 40 boys competing in the 100-metre races at ages 13, 14, and 17, and 45 students taking on the junior 400-metre race.
This illustrates the strong level of participation among the students and the level of engagement within the school.

The second round matchup against Cherrybrook resulted in the elimination of the boys open basketball team. The boys fought valiantly but ultimately fell short. Girls' softball, cricket, netball, and volleyball are the remaining sports for this term. We wish our knockout teams luck!
Zone Swimming
A big congratulations to Evie Rayner Harvey, Emily Ruff and Anthony Ruff who made Zone age champions in swimming this year! Anthony Ruff also broke the 50m freestyle record for the 13-year-old boys.
Killarney had 25 students make it to the Sydney North Carnival that will be held at SOPAC on April 3rd.
Good Luck!
Ultimate Frisbee
Ultimate Frisbee is an active, inclusive, non-contact and fun team sport where the sense of community is just as important as the medals and the glory!
Most years at KHHS (since 2009 I think!) I've tried to encourage involvement in the Ultimate Frisbee scene in Sydney and the wider area when possible. As a player myself, it's always fun to see students enjoying the sport that I’ve loved playing since my university days. And with a handful of teachers just signing off from our first ever teacher Social League team, there’s always some competitive banter to be had!
This week and next term, the recruitment drive will begin and I’m looking for names of any interested students. The opportunities will include:
🥏 Lunchtime games on the oval (Funday Mondays - starting Week 2, T2
🥏 Casual throw or Frisbee golf - Tuesdays at lunch on the oval (starting Week 2, T2)
🥏 Trials and training for Junior and Senior State Championships teams (early T2 - mid T3)
🥏 Trials for U18 NSW rep teams (mid T3, following State Championships)
🥏 Joining a local youth league - Manly Ultimate Club (Wednesday evenings, T4 - T1)
See Mrs Adlard in the English staffroom or in E16 to register your interest.
And for those 14-18 years, there’s a one day Youth tournament this Easter holiday (Tues 11 April) at ELS Hall in Ryde. All experience levels welcome and it’s a ‘hat’ tournament so students will be placed in teams. See flyer below.

Band News
The Band Program has recently had two successful fundraising events to assist with the senior ensemble's tour to Tasmania. Firstly, the Bunnings BBQ where we had parents and students working together with barbecuing and baking for the cake stall along with some student performances. The performances were definitely a highlight for those lucky enough to visit Bunnings on the day. A big thank you to all the families that assisted behind the scenes and on the day, along with our incredible President Jill whose organisation enabled this event to run so smoothly.

Our second fundraiser and first performance of the year for our Concert Band, Stage Band, Symphonic Winds and Big Band ensembles was the Trivia Night at the Forestville RSL. What a fun, fabulous night with fantastic trivia, great prizes and of course amazing performances. We raised a bit over $2,000 to offset our touring students travel to Tasmania.
A very special thank you to the Forestville RSL Club and the local businesses that so kindly supported us and generously donated the amazing prizes we were able to give, our wonderful band parents that bought tickets and supported this event along with the planning and running of the Trivia Night by our hard working IMEP committee.

The KHHS Guitar Ensemble was excited to host our first Interschool Guitar Ensemble concert on Monday 27th March at Forestville RSL. KHHS, Killara High School, Forestville & Chatswood Primary Schools all showcased their talent to an enthusiastic audience of their peers and parents. Such classics as Another Brick on the wall by Pink Floyd and You're my Best Friend by Queen were as good as more modern tunes such as Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol and Old Town Road by Lil Nas X. It was a fabulous night and the Killarney Heights Students put in a great performance.
Thank you to Jim Morley our Sound and Lighting expert and to Kylie our Guitar Ensemble's parent liaison for making this event special for all our performing students and supporting families.

Music in the Forest is being held at the school on Sunday April 2 from 11am-6pm. NSSWE's first community concert where ensembles and bands from primary and high schools across Northern Sydney will join NSSWE at KHHS. The event is sure to be a fun day for all family and friends, with over 25 bands performing. There will be food and beverage stalls on the day for everyone to enjoy.
