Newsletter Term 4 Week 10 2022
Principals Report
Congratulations to our HSC students who received their results today.
Tommy Chen was on the all rounders list, this means that he gained a Band 6 (above 90) in all of his courses, we had 73 students in the Distinguished Achievers list, which lists students who gained a Band 6 in their subject.
There were outstanding results from all areas in the school with 21 subjects having 50% or more students gaining Bands 5&6, which translates to marks over 80 (see table). Once again our Advanced English cohort achieved great results with 45% of students gaining a band 6.
It is good to see the year come to a close with all years celebrating success. We celebrated with students and parents at the Student Recognition night last week in which the hall was packed for the first time in several years. Our Sports Assembly last week was similarly well attended, recognising the huge depth and breadth of our sporting talent at Killarney Heights High School.
Our thanks go to our hardworking P&C who have supported the school in many ways, from providing funding for building projects but also for policy implementation. They have assisted us with the new Diversity and Inclusion policy and the introduction of the new mobile phone policy. It is great to work with a community that is focused on improving the life for all students.
Thanks also have to go to the teachers at Killarney Heights High school, who have worked tirelessly to ensure that all students are challenged to do their best. It has been a hard year, where we often had ¼ of our staff sick per day.
The teacher shortage continues to be an issue, as this newsletter goes to press, we still have 7 teacher vacancies. I will be working over the holidays to try to fill these, however it is difficult in this current environment when we cannot offer extra incentives to applicants.
I wish all families and students a wonderful break, take the time to recharge and spend quality time together.

Year 7 News
And we’ve made it to the end of year 7! What a year it has been. Starting from orientation week and camp at the beginning of the year, to finishing off with presentation evening. It has definitely been a year full of lots of growth for the students. They have learnt to get out of their comfort zones by trying different things, participating in a variety of sports, musical groups and picking up new skills such as coding. I think we can safely say that year 7 have fully transitioned into being high school students and more exciting opportunities await for them next year.
Hoping that everyone has a safe and happy holiday season with more play time outside and less screen time inside.

Year 9 News
What a fantastic year it has been for the amazing year 9 cohort! The first year of taking active ownership of their learning and future education through elective subject program. The entire cohort has risen to the challenge, and it has been great to see them, as their year advisor, excel individually and mature into fantastic young adults and members of the Killarney Community.
This was further exemplified by the new year 9 leaders in our peer support program for 2023, who will be mentoring our incoming Year 7 students in the new year. Our Duke of Edinburgh award students also showed their courage and determination by completing the bronze medal.
It is also with great sadness that I will be leaving the year advising position at the end of the school year, as I have taken a position closer to home and my growing family. I have high expectations for the cohort as they show everyday how diligent, hardworking, compassionate and caring they are towards each other, the school and the community. I wish them all the best in their future endeavours and hope to see them all again, hopefully at graduation!

Year 11 News
Year 11 started with a bang and fitting Year 11 into three terms meant that their Preliminary year flew by. Our focus and mantra for the year were healthy study habits and stronger cohort connections.
Students started the year off with the opportunity to choose teacher mentors. The mentors will act as additional support for students to talk to throughout their senior years. Our focus of developing healthy study habits was affirmed with really positive Semester One reports.
Term Two was relatively quiet with students spending the majority of the time focusing on developing deep knowledge and understanding of their subjects and working on their extended writing structure and technique. The jersey committee assisted in narrowing down jersey design choices and then the all-important nickname decision was made of what to put on the back. In the midst of this; Prefect nominations were made and aspiring leaders attempted to convince their audience of Staff, other Year 11 and Year 10 students through their prefect speeches. Prefects were later announced and the leadership team for 2022 set in place.
Term Three started strong with three days of the Life Ready program involving GP visits, Drug & Alcohol, Safe Partying, Sexual Health and Financial Independence presentations from both external providers and KHHS staff. Day 3 involved a visit from RYDA for Driver and Road Safety.
Year 11 finished with some serious revision and study taking place before the Preliminary Examination period - their first opportunity to experience a formal examination block. The end of Year 11 was celebrated with a really fun day at Luna Park.
Term Four has meant the beginning of Year 12 and their final year of high school. They began their first weeks of Year 12 by listening to a number of KHHS staff giving them handy tips and tricks about navigating the final 12 months successfully. Students were issued with helpful organisation packs to start off on the right foot and get them into healthy routines. By the end of this term they will have completed their first assessment task of their HSC courses.
I hope that all Year 12 2023 students and families enjoy their hard-earned holiday break and look forward to seeing them on Day 1 2023.

Year 12 Graduation
After a trying 6 years, multiple tears and wonderful moments the Year 12 cohort of 2022 finally graduated in term 3. An amazing awards day that provided the cohort with the opportunity to recognise their achievements and celebrate with peers, staff and parents. I want to congratulate the cohort on their amazing success and wish them all the best for their future pathways.

Excellence in HSC Drama
Congratulations to two HSC Drama students from the 2022 graduating class, Max Cumberworth and Dinendran Reddy whose Individual Projects were nominated for the state showcase, 'Onstage'.
Max's design project (Poster and Promotion) consisted of a promotional package for the play 'Death of a Salesman' by Arthur Miller. Max's theatre choice was the Sydney Theatre Company in which he produced a poster, flyer and theatre program to promote a conceptualised production.
Dinny's Scriptwriting project was a 20-minute play titled, 'Anathema' in the style of Ancient Greek Theatre with a focus on two female protagonists, Medea and Hera.
Visual Arts
Excellence in HSC Visual Arts
Congratulations to Annika Fairweather whose Visual Arts Body of Work has been accepted into the 2023 HSC showcase, Art Express. Annika's sculpture, 'Safe to Shore' explores the relationship between nature and man-made architecture. The sculpture experiments with motion, gravity and negative space and elements of the natural world to convey the fragile and temporary nature of form.
This is a prestigious achievement as only a select few of the top performing students in the state are chosen to display their work. Annika's work will be on display at The Art Gallery of NSW from February to May 2023.
Well done, Annika! Killarney is so proud of you!
Year 7 – Australian Art - Printmaking
‘Art is culture made visible’
Margo Ngawa Neale, National Gallery of Australia, 2022
What is Australian Art? Year 7 were presented this question at the beginning of our unit and it can be a tricky one to answer. The visual arts have a long history in Australia, with evidence of Aboriginal art dating back to 50,000 years. Australian art is any art made in or about Australia, or by Australians overseas, from prehistoric times to today. Year 7 have been learning about Australian artists Jean Baptiste Apuatimi and Margaret Preston.
They have created a linocut print that is influenced by both artists. Through printmaking they have been learning about Australian native flowers, positive and negative space, stylizing and the importance of linework. Year 7 designs this year are truly impressive and they have been working to an incredibly high standard. We are looking forward to seeing their artistic skills further develop next year!
Year 8 - Pop Art - Painting
Year 8 have been studying Pop Art - an art movement that emerged in the United Kingdom and the United States during the mid to late 1950s. The movement presented a challenge to traditions of fine art by including imagery from popular and mass culture, such as advertising, comic books
and mundane mass-produced object. Our artist of focus is the King of Pop – Andy Warhol. Year 8 have created a Pop Art inspired painting, choosing inanimate objects that feature branding. They are developing painting skills such as colour theory and how to apply paint. Its been really interesting to see Year 8 reflect on branding and mass consumption in their own life.
Year 9 – Iconic Architecture – Drawing and sculpture
Year 9 have been studying architecture – looking at Modernist and Postmodernist architects Frank Lloyd Wright and Frank Gehry. Students then completed a tonal drawing of a building, focusing on tone and perspective. From here, we moved to sculpture and Year 9 have created a building of their choice using cardboard.
Our Year 9 cohort are incredibly strong artists and we are so excited to see their art practice further develop next year.
Year 10 - Still Life - Painting with Ms Legend
Year 10 have been studying Still Life and the genre of Vanitas with our newest member of the Visual Arts team – Justine Legend! (the rumours are true – she actually is a legend).
Objects in Vanitas are symbolic and often carry hidden meaning. Students have chosen objects that reflect aspects of their identity. They are using acrylic paint, focusing on composition, colour mixing and paint application. Ms Legend is a talented painter and has made this activity so fun for Year 10. Students have been working incredibly hard – they are a talented bunch!
Year 12 - Body of Work
Our new Year 12 students are in the early stages of planning and developing their body of work. In Week 4 they presented a proposal for their Body of Work to their class. From here, they were given formal feedback and have been experimenting with artmaking materials. Watch this space!
Year 12 are also studying a unit of work called ‘Contemporary Art’ where we explore the art practice of contemporary artists, Ai Weiwei and Patricia Piccinini.
Ceramics Club – Thursdays 3.30 – 4.30pm - Term 4
Ceramics Club is our most popular Art Club and it filled up quickly this term!
This term we have students ranging from Year 7 to Year 12. Many are beginners and we also have some intermediate students. In the first few weeks of ceramic club we teach students building and joining skills such as pinch pot, coil and slab. After they have mastered these skills, they start a project of their own. Some students created larger vessels and others made a series of ceramic pots. We even had some students create checker boards! It is always such a joy to see keen Visual Arts students come together and work on an artwork they are passionate about.
If you missed out on a spot, Ceramics Club will be running again next year in Term 4. Our after-school art classes run in Terms 2, 3 and 4 and are run by the Visual Arts teachers. This year we have had printmaking, photography and and ceramics club. Keep your eyes peeled for more art clubs next year!

Year 12 Geography Excursion
Year 12 Geography conducted fieldwork in Barangaroo, looking at the urban dynamics of urban renewal and urban consolidation, while investigating the social, environmental and economic sustainability of the suburb/region. Students were shocked by the prices of apartments in the residential towers, average weekly income of those working Barangaroo and the fact that the City of Sydney spend $200,000 a year on a professional dog walker, whose job it is to scare seagulls away. This fieldwork allowed students a visual and physical experience of the information they are learning in the classroom, allowing them to better enhance their understanding of the topics. A great day was had by all and even the weather turned it on.

Languages
French
Bonjour,
At the end of term 2, Francois Vantomme, Director and Editor in Chel of Le Courrier Australien came in our class to present his job. Est. 1892, Le Courrier Australien was Australia’s first foreign language and longest running newspaper. It was an invaluable experience to students.
This term, the students are writing articles. Francois Vantomme will select the best article(s) and he might publish them in Le Courrier Australien!
'Our year 7 French background speakers class was lucky enough to have François Vantomme join us in class to talk to us about ‘Le Courrier Australien’ and his job as a journalist. Learning about François’ job was an amazing experience. During this lesson we were able to ask him many questions which we (as a class) thought of in the lessons prior to this. The last 3 weeks we have been doing research and creating our own articles which one or two of these will be chosen to hopefully be published in ‘Le Courier Australien’.' Desiree
Lights, Camera, Action!!
The Y7 French Background Speakers class participated in a language contest organised by the MLTANSW (Modern Language teachers association of NSW) called Linguafest. They created and submitted a short film called “La Sonate Inattendue”. Following the format of the Tropfest competition. The 2022 theme was "GENEROSITY" and the signature item "A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT."
It was a term long project, the students individually wrote a story then voted for their favourite story to use for the short film contest. Janos Jersch came in our class, he has over 20 years of experience as a cinematographer and director. He worked on international films such as Harry Potter, and award-winning television documentaries.
Our film came away with the title of BEST DRAMA! We were all thrilled with the knowledge that our attempt at filmmaking impressed the judges thoroughly.
Our film La Sonate Inattendue can be viewed with English subtitles at the following link: La Sonate Inattendue.mp4
The students wrote a story and with the support of Janos Jersch, they created a film called La Sonate Inattendue. They won the best drama prize.
'The French for background speaker class has worked on a project for over a term. We filmed a short-film to do with generosity and a musical instrument. This film took part in a contest with about twenty other schools who each submitted a short-film in their own language. At the end of term 4, the judges announced the winners and our film was awarded ‘best drama’. I personally loved the experience of shooting the short-film with my class. We had help from one of our peer’s dad, Janos Jersch, who is a professional cameraman and it made the whole experience so much more professional. We got to use professional material like high-graphic cameras, a sound stick, and even a clapboard! Every morning we would rush into class to quickly get everything ready at 7:50. Everybody was still half asleep but we worked through it so that we could finish the short-film. We grabbed the cameras, the props, the costumes, the scripts, and the equipment and quickly ran on set to set everything up. We then put everything in place and listened for the “lights, camera, action!” ' Lea
'I was a camera man with Janos and I enjoyed filming with him and Charlie in the morning for French class. I learnt how to use a camera properly and how to take good videos with a professional camera. I really liked this project, it was a lot of fun and I hope to do it again. Thank you Janos for helping us film the movie.' Pierre

Japanese
Select students from years 7-12 participated in a Zoom session with a school in Japan. They asked and answered questions about life in Australia and Japan and practiced interacting with each other in real time for the first time! While some students on both sides were a little shy at first, it was nice to see everyone smiling and interacting in such a positive exchange. We hope to continue to hold such sessions and encourage more active talk between our students and those in Japan in the future.

Peer Support 2022 Wrap Up!
The Year 10 Peer Support student leaders of 2022 have officially completed their eight sessions of the “Building Resilience” program which were conducted throughout the year. These sessions provided our Year 7 students with a safe and supportive forum to recognise and share their strengths and achievements, identify people who support them and learn how to view challenges as opportunities for growth.
When we first started Peer Support, Year 10 students were taught the secrets of the teaching profession; behaviour management, knowing your learners and keeping activities engaging. These tools have guided Year 10 students to navigate both the challenges and rewards of working with a group of younger students. They have formed strong, supportive relationships with their Year 7 groups and it has been a pleasure to see Year 10 students become confident leaders.
As recognition for our Peer Support leaders participation, students attended a thrilling rewards excursion to Raging Waters for some well deserved fun in the sun! We want to thank all of our Peer Support leaders for their ongoing enthusiasm and initiative in building a positive culture within the KHHS community. We could not have done this without each and every one of you. It has been a pleasure to work with these Year 10 students embrace a growth mindset and inspire younger students.
We also wish to congratulate Jaren McGrath-Peawini and Jodie Roper as the newly appointed Peer Support Coordinators of 2023. We know they will do an amazing job at supporting the new Year 7 students joining KHHS next year.

Ava experiences what it is like to be a Midwife
Report from her employer
Ava has been ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!! She is eager, keen to get involved and so keen to learn. She has loved learning some midwifery clinical skills, learning the theory behind what I do and why I do it, and she has really enjoyed meeting the antenatal couples, and postnatal families too. So, thank you for allowing Ava the opportunity to experience Private Practicing Midwifery with me at The Nesting Hub.
Ava has learnt how to take a Blood Pressure, how to Palpate a Pregnant Abdomen, how to listen to a Foetal Heartbeat in utero, how to Bath a Baby, Change a Nappy, and then Swaddle a baby afterwards.....and of course, much more besides. Ava has asked lots of relevant questions, she has been genuinely interested and motivated, and her communication skills have been exceptional with myself, and with every one of my clients, and their families. She is friendly, happy, smiley, and all of my clients have enjoyed her sharing this week with them.
MAX WILLMINGTON was very lucky to secure a place in the Aviation Industry working in the hangar at Bankstown Airport. Below is Max’s report
In my work experience I went around to small regional airports to pick up pieces of planes and returned to major airports around Sydney such as Sydney International Airport and Bankstown airport. I spent most of my time in work experience correcting corrosion, doing wiring in the bottom of planes and fixing engines with the help of the people around the hanger. I did work on private jets and small planes for pilots to train in. During my time in work experience I was able to gain valuable experience for future career opportunities. I learnt about the behind the scenes of how planes work and how to work as a team cooperatively.
UNSW ENGINEERING WORKSHOP – Brent Heathcote
2 students from KHHS were very privileged to attend the UNSW Engineering workshop for year 10 students. The focus on Humanitarian Engineering – Solutions that improve lives and livelihoods.
BRENT’s Report is below
On 2nd December, Becky Cheung and I travelled to UNSW for an engineering workshop where we explored and participated in activities relating to specific areas of engineering studies. Our preselected workshops were in manufacturing and mechanical engineering as well as solar and photovoltaics engineering.
During the manufacturing workshop, we designed payloads to deliver supplies to remote areas by use of a rocket. Similar to the egg-drop test, we built cages that contained a squash ball which were dropped from various heights and the ones that landed upright won.
In our second workshop, we explored the use of solar panels and their workings by creating a solar powered fan and experimenting with different voltage outputs from using different amounts of solar panels.
Throughout the day we explored and got a tour of the UNSW engineering faculty and got many opportunities to ask questions about university living to the student ambassadors and other students who were very eager about their studies.

Instrumental Music Ensembles End of Year Event- Tuesday 13th December
What a wonderful way to wrap up the band year with an evening of performances by every band at the Forestville RSL, along with guest performances from our local primary school.
The band program at our school provides much joy for both the band members and the community in general. So many families attended Tuesday night's event, where the weather was kind to us to enjoy this special outdoor performance and the restaurant queue snaked around the venue... it was very long.
The night ended with many thanks and gifts for each ensembles leader, including the amazing band committee along with a very special thanks to Rosy Johnston leaving us for a full-time position in the Catholic School system and Nic Jeffries who is relocating to Adelaide.
We look forward to many ensemble events next year including of course the Band Tour to Tasmania in May 2023.
Announcing our Fundraising Trivia Night for the KHHS Band Tasmanian Tour 2023
We are planning an evening of trivia, games, band performances and raffle prizes on the evening of Tuesday 14th March 2023, 6-9pm at the Forestville RSL. The evening is being held to raise funds to contribute to the tour fund and reduce the parent contribution for each family.
There will be food platters, drinks to buy at the bar and of course the main event which will be the trivia - so much fun for groups of friends and families.
Final details of cost and inclusions are still being determined so watch your email/future newsletters for further information and there will be a link to trybooking.com to book your tickets in February.
If you are able to provide a raffle prize or have any good contacts you can pass to us that would be great as we would like to offer a range of free hospitality, drinks, products, entertainment etc as raffle and game prizes on the night.

KHHS 40 Year Reunion
In November the graduation class of 1982 celebrated with our 40 Year Reunion. A great night was had by all as we reminisced (as best we could!) and caught up with life-long friends. We are so lucky to have had such a great cohort and every ten years we look forward to celebrating our time together at Killarney.
