Newsletter Term 1 Week 11 2022
Principals Report

Dear Parents and Carers,
The last newsletter started with me commenting on the weather, and here we are 4 weeks later still enduring the downpour. Although the Northern Suburbs have been hit by rain, storms and big seas, the majority of us have been spared from the intense floods that have hit the north coast of NSW. At school we have suffered damage to the hall floor and stage and have had some leaks in D block – I am hoping that the roof will be replaced in these buildings in the near future.
It is so sad to see that the areas around Lismore have been affected by floods for the second time this year. I am proud that our students managed to raise over $2000 for schools in this area by running a mufti day, guessing competitions and bake sales. Thank you to Ms Peters and Mr Fuller for organising this with student leaders.
You may have read my emails and stories in the news regarding the shortage of teachers. At Killarney we planned for this as best we could, by employing extra teachers at the beginning of the year, however some days this term we have had 16 teachers away with only 2 staff to cover their classes. To cope with this all teachers (including the deputy principals and myself) have been teaching extra classes, so that your children can continue with meaningful learning in all their classes. In other areas of the state, students have been put in the hall and have been given minimal supervision. It is fortunate that we have not had to do this as yet, however, this shortage, which is not just due to COVID is not sustainable in the long term.
Lockdown has certainly not dampened Killarney Heights High School’s involvement in sport, now the shackles are off, you can see how well our students are doing later in this newsletter in so many different sports. Aedyn Pratley is off to Dubai for fencing and will complete in the Epee, as a member of the National Junior Fencing Team. What a great opportunity for him, we hope he brings home a medal!
A big shout out to Beach Volleyball Schools Cup players, Ash Giddens and Ryan Takayasu who just played in the Australian titles in Coolangatta. They came 4th, narrowly missing out on a Bronze medal. I was watching their first game, and thought they were very unlucky not to beat Scots, who went onto win the gold medal.

Finally, many families have applied for leave to see friends and family overseas. It is good to see that most of you have tried to straddle the holidays to minimize the number of days off school. If your child will be missing school, please refer to the student assessment book for their year, which can be found on our website, and if possible complete assessments before you go on holidays so as not to affect their learning.
Even if you are not going away, please enjoy your break and have a rest, we are looking forward to a more settled term 2.
Regards,
Hayley Emmerton
Principal

NAPLAN
Year 7 and Year 9 will be sitting the NAPLAN in Week 3 of Term 2 (10-13 May). This test is designed to get a snapshot of student skills in reading, writing, language (grammar, punctuation and spelling), and numeracy. There is no expectation for students to actively study or prepare for the tests. However, it is vital that students complete each test to the best of their ability in order to ensure that student and cohort data is reflective of their current skill level. This data is used within the school to inform class placements, priority areas for teaching, and identification of students requiring additional support.
The timetable for the week is included below. Outside of NAPLAN test periods all other classes will run as normal and full attendance is expected. See next article “Laptops and NAPLAN” about technological information.

Period 5 |
Please note that catch up tests will be held the following week. If students are unable to attend any sessions they will be recorded as Absent and will not receive any mark or data.
Disability provisions have been organised for students who usually receive these. Please contact as soon as possible if you believe the school is unaware of additional special provisions required for the NAPLAN.
We appreciate your support ensuring your child is organised and prepared, allowing us to collect accurate and helpful data to assist us in teaching. If you have any concerns please contact the school as soon as possible.
NAPLAN test rules
- All students in Year 7 and 9 who are present at school on the day of NAPLAN tests must undertake the test, unless a NAPLAN withdrawal form has been submitted and approved.
Students must:
- Remain in the hall for the entirety of the cohort test session
- Remain in the NAPLAN locked browser for the entirety of the cohort test session. Any students who finishes the test early or exits the locked browser must close their laptop and wait silently for the session to finish.
- Complete the test using their own PIN code
- Not speak or communicate with other students during the test
- Not look at answers on other students’ screens or engage in any other forms of ‘cheating’
- Not use any form of mobile form, smartphone or internet browser
- Alert supervising teachers immediately if there are problems with the test or their device
Laptops at Killarney

NAPLAN
In preparation for NAPLAN next term, students completed some practice tests to familiarise themselves with the online interface and test structure. It was also an opportunity for the identification of issues to reduce the stress of technology not working as expected.
To minimise issues, it is important that:
- Students have working wired headphones that they know how to use. The wireless options are not reliable with the NAPLAN software
- Students have a fully charged laptop that will last for the duration of the tests
The locked browser includes a calculator for the numeracy test, so the only equipment students need for all NAPLAN tests is their laptop and a pencil.
If your child missed completing the practise tests or will be completing NAPLAN on a different device to what was used in the practise the locked-down browser will need to be installed. Students should see Mr Lau if they have difficulty installing the software.
Managing issues
If students are experiencing either hardware or software issues, they may see Mr Lau in the library. He is our Technical Support Officer and is available from 8am every day. If you have concerns that your child has not seen Mr Lau, please contact the school – Attention Mrs Walters
We understand that sometimes laptops need to be repaired, and will be unavailable for a period of time. For this reason, we have a limited supply of short-term loan devices available. We require parents to contact Mrs Walters if this service is required, as it is policy that a conditional agreement is entered into prior to the loan being approved.
If you have purchased a laptop using the link on our school website, we manage any repairs that are required for you. Students just need to take their device to Mr Lau. He will log the issue, liaise with the technicians and organise a loan device while the original is inoperative.
MILO - Homework Club

MILO (My Independent Learning Opportunity)
MILO is a space where students can come after school to individually revise or study, complete homework or assessment tasks and work in small groups to consolidate their understanding of different subjects. It is on Mondays and Thursdays in the library between 3.10 to 5.10 PM with Miss Kang and Mr Schwab.
The aim of the program is to support students in unpacking and completing homework and assessment tasks, improving organisational skills to stay on top of their schoolwork. Students from all years between 7 - 12 are encouraged to come along to receive assistance and guidance from the teacher and their peers.
Students also get a cup of Milo to help them stay focused!
CAPA
It has been a busy start to the year in Visual Arts. As term 1 comes to end it is always special to step back and see all the amazing things students have been creating in the KHHS art studios.
Year 7 have been exploring ‘Food in Art’. Students have been designing ridiculous and brilliant burgers through illustration and the art of collage. The next step in this task will be to take their collage designs and turn them into 3D Sculptures inspired by the Pop Artist Claes Oldenburg.

Year 8 looked at the power of art for creating conversation and awareness about important issues. Students researched animals whose existence is threatened by pollution. They produced artworks showing an exaggerated vision of their chosen animal’s past, present, and future.

Year 9 are looking at their relationship with technology and have used ideas from narrative art to visually communicate these ideas. Students are in the process of turning their illustrated designs into lino prints, a process that involves carving into lino plates, inking the carved plate, and then putting it through a printing press.

Year 10 have been working on how they can manipulate form and surface when working with clay. Students are building 2 ceramic vessels; one inspired by the natural landscape, the other by the industrial/built landscape.

Year 11 started their preliminary course learning about how different artists approach representing the Australian Landscape. Through a range of 2D artmaking materials year 11 have created 2 representations of a chosen Australian landscape, one realistic style and one inspired by abstraction.

Year 12 are half way through! Our Visual Artists are deep in the process of developing their Body Of Work. It is so exciting to see them get creative developing there conceptual and technical skills.

Peer Support
Year 7 Peer Support Program
Peer Support is an in-school program that equips Year 7 students with social and emotional skills to increase their connections to one another, develop resilience-building strategies and form a sense of belonging to the school. Peer Support sessions are run entirely by Year 10 students and occur twice a term.
In Term 4 2021, our amazing team of Year 10 Peer Support leaders completed extensive training in order to understand how to best aid Year 7 during their orientation week, and throughout Term 1. Year 10 have successfully enabled Year 7 to form meaningful connections here at Killarney; at Year 7 Camp leaders assisted in the overall running of the camp as well as taking the initiative to run several team-building activities. All students had a wonderful time and we whole-heartedly thank Year 10 for their efforts.
Our two Peer Support sessions in Week 8 and Week 10 of this term, focused on making friendships, learning about Killarney school culture and routines, and resilience building. Sessions will continue in Term 2, with the first session commencing on Friday 29th April, in Period 2.
Looking forward to seeing you all again!

Swimming Carnivals
School Swimming Carnival
The 4th of March was the day that Killarney Heights High travelled up the road to Warringah Aquatic Centre for its first competitors only swimming carnival. It started off being stressful as not only parents were on the pool deck but I had parents checking the results so the pressure was on not to make any errors. Mr Wilson had multiple roles and Ms Trafford and Mr Van Elsland tackled the race entries. The Kito twins, Imogen Lodding and Laetitia Everingham were once again causing Mr Desnik issues as multiple records were broken which meant an increase in administration. Despite having less students participating the standard was high with the following students excelling in some of the races: Elizabeth Solomon, Andre Rios and Oliver Dowbiggin, Lilyana Rayner-Harvey, Will Hammond, Daisy Tinsley and Oscar Suter.
Congratulations are needed for all the house captains who swam and encouraged all the participants throughout the day. The day ended with the infamous “Champions Race” with the girl’s event being the battle between youth and experience with Latetitia edging out 14-year-old Skye Kito by .3 of a second. The boy’s event was a fairy-tale finish with the lucky loser Seiya Saito in his last race for the school winning this prestigious event.
Congratulations to all competitors and below are the overall results of another successful Killarney Heights High school day.

Zone Swimming Carnival
Due to Covid and competitors only school carnival Killarney Heights High went to the zone carnival with the lowest numbers in its recorded history. The team was amazing with team captain and the one and only senior Laetitia Everingham setting a wonderful example for the young swimmers.
The whole team were keen and enthusiastic and never said “I’m tired or I can’t” when the team manger asked them to swim extra races. This was rewarded with outstanding school performance Killarney Heights coming in 3rd out of eight schools.
The team was enthusiastic and represented the school with pride and some of the outstanding individual performances were as follows:
Regional Qualification:
Skye Kito 14 yrs aged Champion- 200 IM, 200m Freestyle, 100 Breastroke, 100m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly
Sydney Kito 14 yrs- 200IM, 200 Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 100m Backstroke, 100m Butterfly
Laetitia Everingham 18yrs- 200IM, 200 Freestyle, 100m Breastroke, 100m Butterfly
Imogen Lodding 15yrs- 100m Backstroke
Elizabeth Solomon 15yrs - 100m Butterfly
The individuals were not the only successes for Killarney. Killarney has amazing team work and collaboration as three teams written below qualified for the regional carnival at Homebush.
15 years Girls 200m Freestyle Relay- Elizabeth Solomon, Imogen Lodding, Aneliese Cumberworth and Tahlia Russell
Girls open 200m Medley Relay- Imogen Lodding, Skye Kito, Laetitia Everingham and Elizabeth Solomon
Boys 13yrs 200m Freestyle Relay- Max Figueira, Declan Feng, Benjamin Suen and Will Hammond

Mountain Biking
Early March Killarney Heights High school had students compete in the Interschool Mountain Bike Championships in Thredbo. This year saw the team suddenly become smaller because of the effects of Covid, from 16 to 11 students in the days before the event. The small team of both male and female students worked hard and placed 28th out of 204 schools, an amazing result.
A big shout out to Amelie Hunkizer who scored the highest for the whole school despite only being in year 7.

Table Tennis
Sydney North Table Tennis Knockout tournament took place on Friday 25th March at Niagara Park Stadium. In table tennis, the whole knockout tournament is played in one day. KHHS was represented by Clement Charbonneau (Year 8), Elouan Cestier (Year 8), Allen Li (Year 7) and Kimi Mak (Year 7).

Our first opponent was Kincumber HS. Clement, our number one seeded player, put up an enormous five set fight against their number one player, with the rest of us holding our collective breath, and he only very narrowly missed out on delivering our first win. It turned out that their other players were strong as well and, as a result, we moved down to the losers’ rounds.
There, we faced Lisarow HS that was represented by three Year 12 boys and their teacher who was filling in as the fourth player. When we took to the games, these big boys, double the size of ours, were mostly smiling in stupefaction, running after the balls that were whooshing past them. Clement and Allen won their games convincingly 3:0. Elouan lost his close match with their teacher and Kimi also lost, but delivered some incredible forehand smashes that left the Year 12 boy standing in amazement. To top it off, Kimi and Allen won their thrilling doubles match 3:2, showing off their forehand smashes and nerves as strong as steel.
Next, Clement and Elouan versed Wadalba Community school’s first and second player, winning both, but after that, unfortunately, we had to catch the train back.
Thank you to Kimi’s dad who drove Kimi and Allen and to all the parents involved for trusting their sons to go to “woop-woop” during the time of such unpredictable weather events – we managed to leave the area just before the deluges started again!

Knockout NEWS!
This is a new part of our sporting news at KHHS. Knockout news is about keeping the community up to date with the state wide knockout competions in the various sports. The Run Beyond Project
Running again this year is a group of students training for The Broken Marathon Relay in June whilst raising money for The Run Beyond Project. Students have been meeting at 7: 15 am every Monday morning to start the week well. The girls are now past their half way mark in their training, having run more than half their required distance in training.
Over the holidays, students will participate in a Running Stars event, a free community run fun run early Sunday morning. Here they will compete and also volunteer to pack up the course, doing their bit for the community.
If you see the group running, give them a cheer or a beep.

Student Achievements
NSW Beach Volleyball State Championships
In March we played in the NSW Beach Volleyball State Championships at Mollymook. Luckily the wet weather on Saturday lifted and Sunday was perfect sunshine for the boy’s event.
We played five matches starting early in the morning. We got off to a good start winning the first two matches. The next two matches were very close going to 3 sets but we lost those. Towards the afternoon the heat was scorching and the wind picked up making play difficult. We were able to make it to the bronze medal match which we won in 2 sets, achieving 3rd place overall in the under 21 boy’s age group.
We are looking forward to flying to Coolongatta, Queensland to represent NSW at National Championships in a 4 day event.

Men's Epee - National Junior Team member
Aedyn Pratley of Year 12 will be travelling to Dubai over the holidays to represent Australia in World Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships in Dubai 2-10 April 2022! He is one of only 4 boys from Australia selected in the Epee event
Here you can see him with his Gold Medal trophy from the U17 Australian National Championships December 2021 and also a photo of him competing in Italy earlier this year.
Good luck Aedyn, we hope you do well.

Australian Athletics Championships
On Wednesday the 30th of March, Lizzy McMillen in year 12 competed at the Australian athletics championships. She came 3rd in U20 woman's 10 km race walk, massive personal best time of 48min in the world junior qualifying time, ranking her 4th in world in the U20 and 20th fastest U20 Australian women in history of race walking. As a school and year 12 cohort we congratulate Lizzy on such an achievement and we are extremely proud of your results!
Well done!

Vouch for Lismore Fundraiser
Prefect and SRC Fundraiser

On Friday 1st of April, the KHHS Prefects and SRC ran their first fundraising event of the year, to support those who have been affected by the recent flooding in Lismore.

The main event was, of course, the ever popular sausage sizzle. Our fantastic student leaders cooked and sold hundreds of sausage sandwiches, doing it all with a smile

To accompany this sizzling success, there was also a Bake Sale, with baked goods such as cookies, muffins, cakes, brownies and other delicious items generously baked by students and teachers. The Bake Sale was so popular that it sold out in under 10 minutes!

Next to the Bake Sale was the challenging Lolly Jar Guessing Competition. Students had to guess either the total number of wrapped lollies in one jar, or the total weight of a jar full of sour baby lollies. Congratulations to Matthew and Yuta who each had the most accurate guesses.

...and in case you’re wondering, there were 213 wrapped lollies, and the sour baby jar weight just under 3.9kg!
After a massive day and an incredible amount of hard work from students and teachers, the event raised well over $2000, which is an outstanding achievement, and demonstrates the generosity of our school community to give both their time and money to a worthy cause.
Well done to everyone involved!
French
Last Friday I went on an excursion with my peers and all the students in Years 9-12 studying French. We left school via bus and went to see a French movie that was in the French film festival. It was called ‘The Fantastic journey of Margot and Marguerite’ and was about two young girls switching places, one in the future and one in the past. It was very entertaining and had a lot of comedy, and the music was quite nice. The actors were very talented although I didn’t recognise any of them. There were also subtitles in English to help anglophones follow the plot.
After the movie, we went to the city for lunch at a restaurant called ‘The Little Snail’. We could choose a three course meal from a large selection of dishes available at the restaurant. For the entrée, I chose a dozen snails cooked in a butter and garlic sauce, which I enjoyed very much. Other options available were onion soup, calamari rings and a French salad. For the main course I ate coq au vin, which is a French delicacy featuring young chicken cooked in a rich wine sauce and served with vegetables and mashed potatoes, which was truly exceptional. The other choices for the main meal included fish fillet with risotto and vegetarian pasta, which were delicious. For dessert, we could choose between chocolate mousse, vanilla ice cream and crème caramel. All of the dishes were of very high quality and well plated. It was a great experience and I can’t wait to go back next year!

Concours de la Francophonie
The Y7 French Prior Learners and Background Speakers recently participated in a contest organised with KHPS on la Francophonie. It was a drawing competition and we joined the KHPS Assembly on Zoom where the winners and finalists were announced by the French Consul General, Anne Boillon. The French background students illustrated a Francophone proverb and the Prior Learners French words we use in English.
“Un grand bravo” to the winners:
- Joy (French background) with “Ce n’est pas la mer à boire”
- Pippa (Prior Learners) with “mousse”
A big applause to our finalists:
- Anna and Lea (French background) with respectively “Le visage est le miroir du coeur” and “Après la pluie, le beau temps"
- Olivia and Jasmine (Prior Learners) with “déjà vu” and “silhouette”
Ms Emmerton came to our morning French class to distribute the certificates and congratulate the students. Bravo à tous!

Band News
Band Event- North Shore Music Spectacular 29th March 2022 Chatswood RSL
The Killarney Heights High School band program had its first concert in nearly 12 months at the Chatswood RSL. Finally, a chance to show off to a live audience by Performing in the heats of the Northern Sydney Band Spectacular. And what an audience. It was standing room only in the packed venue with many forced to listen from outside in the hallway.
All our student musicians rose to the occasion. All six ensembles and soloist made excellent contributions to what was a brilliant evening. The music was lively, and entertaining being tilted very much towards our aim this year to have fun.
The adjudicators agreed it was a tough choice making special mention of the work by our youngest performers , the Concert Band.
Congratulations to the Symphonic Winds, Big Band and soloist Matt Di-Ienno who were selected to go through to the next stage. They will compete against the best Sydney’s North has to offer at the Band Spectacular final expected on the 14th of May at Killara High.
Our thanks to our wonderful conductors lead by Nic Jeffries for their efforts in getting the bands up and running again after two very difficult years. Thanks too to the Band Committee and parent helpers for the ‘roadie’ assistance moving instruments.
Our appreciation also to the Chatswood RSL and it’s wonderful support of High School music.
Band Committee and Conductors.

WORK EXPERIENCE
goIT Girls – Virtual Work Experience Program
The goIT Girls program is a week-long work experience program aimed at female students in Years 10 and 11. At TCS, we are empowering Australian students with the skills they need to be ready for the workplace of the future.
Participants will meet senior executives from our company and from our client organisations. These executives will provide insight into the various STEM roles that exist across the business spectrum, with the hope of inspiring a new generation of innovators, problem solvers and technology professionals. The aim is to provide insight into the existence of gender occupational stereotypes in the technology industry in order to challenge and eventually overcome them.
goIT Girls has four areas of focus:
- Provide insight into the technology industry, and the application of technology in business.
- Challenge gender stereotypes by showcasing women in STEM as role models
- Build technical skills by and applying technology to solve business problems
- Enhance confidence and employability skills
Eligibility
This is a free program for students in years 10-11 enrolled in Australian schools. The program is aimed at young women who are curious about a career in technology. Students do not need any prior experience with technology to participate.
