Newsletter Term 1 Week 6
Principals Report
Dear Parents and Carers,
As I write this, I have been alerted that the wild very wet weather will continue for the next few days, but should ease off in the later part of the week. I do feel for the students who have not been able to get out and about for sport and other activities over the past month. Although we have been impacted, we must remember those in Northern NSW and other areas in the state, whose homes, businesses and schools have been devastated by the unprecedented flooding.
We were lucky to have a break in the weather for the year 7 camp, both teachers and students had a wonderful time, despite coming home dirty and exhausted. We are so pleased that this could go ahead, especially since this year group had so many cancelled activities over the past two years. We thank year 10 peer support for doing a fantastic job in assisting year 7 in the smooth transition to high school.
This year the intake of year 7 is 208 students, this is the largest year 7 cohort in my 7 years at Killarney Heights High School. We have made a decision not to market the school with shiny brochures and advertisements, rather we have concentrated on educating students and working with teachers so that all students can do their very best. We are pleased that our community values what we do by trusting us with their children.
Our Open Night for 2022 on Tuesday 8th March at 6.00 pm, is via zoom this year.
At the time of organising, we were not allowed to have parents on the grounds due to COVID restrictions, but with the wet forecast for tomorrow night it might be better joining us from the comfort of your lounge room. Please tell your friends and family to get a zoom account and log in.
One of our strategies this year is to challenge and encourage High Performing students, we recognise that there are talented students not only in academic fields, but in sport and leadership. For academic students, we identify those students and then ensure that their work is both stimulating and challenging. In year 7 we have identified students in mathematics who would benefit from a more thought-provoking curriculum in mathematics. For those students who excel in leadership, we are developing new opportunities for students to learn, build on these each year and demonstrate their skills. This is a long term project, which Ms Shepanski will be heading up. We are excited to see the outcome of this as we believe that our students will be our leaders of the future.

It’s been a great start to the year with the majority of students wearing our uniform proudly, showing that they have respect for the school. Take care that your child is wearing all black shoes, the school cap and for the girls the sports shorts with the logo on them. Don’t forget to purchase a jacket ready for the cooler days that are coming. If you put your child’s name on the uniform, we will endeavour to return it to the owner. I hate to see the piles of jackets in the lost property box that are unclaimed.

In Term 1, 2022 Wednesday afternoon recreational sport has recently returned to Killarney Heights High School (KHHS). The students have been enjoying the afternoons participating in a range of sports, located at school and in the community. Year 7 Camp
Year 7 have freshly come back from their 3-day adventure at the Tops Conference Centre. Exhausted but exhilarated. All students had a memorable time on their first high school camp as they went out of their comfort zone on the giant swing and vertical cluster, learned to collaborate through activities such as survivor and newspaper fashion and made new friends along the way. They all seem more comfortable navigating their way around school and prepared to tackle the journey ahead.

Student Achievements
Aylish Scotter (Year 7) and her team won the national championships for the 3x3 hustle basketball in Ballarat in January 2022.
Ryan Takayasu and Ash Giddins from Year 11 participated in the Boys Beach Volleyball School Cup in Manly.
The boys did really well against students from Scots College, International Grammar School and Northern Beaches Secondary College. With no coaching or support from the sidelines they managed to gain 2nd place in their pool and went into the semi-finals.
They lost the first game against the team which won the gold medal. They then played to decide 3rd place but after all 3 sets, they lost by 2 points in the last set. It was a great game and we are extremely proud of them.
The boys looked very smart in their school volleyball jerseys.
